PRE-IB PROGRAM

Pre-IB English

The RL Pre-IB English program has three core components. These components have been defined and refined over multiple years to demystify the requirements for English excellence and to put students ahead of the pack as they enter the IBDP.
PROGRAM CONTENT

Who Should Enrol?

Students seeking to:
– Get the best possible start and stand out in a highly competitive field
– Find a passion for literature
– Create a unique voice
– Gain exposure to different perspecives on life, and deeper aspects of themselves, through literature

Courses covered:

The first component involves extensive deep dives into single texts over longer periods of time. Students are taught how to track, analyse and interpret plot, character motivation and character choices, and from these to independently derive a personal determination as to what the themes of the text are.

The second component focuses on essay and response writing – here students learn to apply their analytical skills in order to craft compelling contentions which will truly stand out, as well as how to recognise literary devices, and explain their effect on the reader.

The third component involves exposure to unseen texts from the entire gamut of text-types covered in the IBDP English A programs. Students practise thinking calmly and fluidly in the face of the unfamiliar.

Students are entrusted with their own learning and encouraged to take ownership of their successes and (temporary!) failures – thereby developing critical discipline and study skills in preparation for an elite performance in the IBDP.
