What is VCE?

VCE stands for the Victorian Certificate of Education, which represents the high school education level in the state of Victoria, Australia. This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete their secondary education in Victoria. If there are insufficient students enrolling in a subject, schools may not offer it due to economic or scheduling reasons. The final VCE score consists of the top four subjects plus one or two additional subjects. What is IB?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year course designed for students aged 16 to 19 and is widely recognized by universities around the world. The programme originated in the mid-1960s, founded and developed by educators in Geneva. After six years of operation, the bilingual diploma was officially established in 1975. The programme is administered and organized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB), with instruction languages including English, French, and Spanish.

IBDP students must study at schools offering the IBDP. Students choose six subjects and complete corresponding assessments. Additionally, three core components must be completed: Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and the Extended Essay (EE). Subject results are typically determined through a combination of internal and external assessments. Each subject usually includes two to three timed written exams as external assessments. The Economics syllabus covers four modules: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics, and Development Economics, equally weighted and well integrated. There are no separate exams for micro and macroeconomics; the final exam covers all four.

Microeconomics studies economic variables affecting individuals, firms, and markets; macroeconomics focuses on national, government, and societal variables. IB Economics emphasizes combining theory with real-world issues, including current economic activity, trade, development, and sustainability.

SL and HL cover all four modules, but HL students also study econometrics and welfare economics.

Many find IB difficult. SL Economics is slightly less difficult than A-Level and other international courses; HL is slightly more challenging. Students aiming for university majors in economics, business, or finance should take HL Economics; others may choose SL.

Assessment includes 80% external and 20% internal evaluations. SL external has two papers: Paper 1 covers micro and macro with short answer questions; Paper 2 has data response questions on international and development economics. SL internal involves writing three commentaries on news articles.

HL external has three papers: Paper 1 and 2 same as SL; Paper 3 includes additional HL material requiring calculations. HL internal also requires three commentaries.

Group 4: Experimental Sciences

Subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Design Technology, and Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS, SL only). ESS is part of both Group 3 and 4. Since 2014, Computer Science moved from Group 5 to Group 4.

Important: IBDP Physics will undergo reforms in 2023, changing assessment methods:

External assessments will be two papers: Paper 1A (multiple choice), Paper 1B (data analysis) focusing on skills like charts, units, and uncertainty; and Paper 2 (short answer and extended response).
Some options are removed, some content reallocated.
The reforms merge Paper 1A and 1B into one Paper 1.
Paper 2’s importance and exam length increase, especially for HL.
Assessment times and weightings differ from the current syllabus.

Currently, SL has Paper 1 (0.75h), Paper 2 (1.25h), and Paper 3 (1h); HL has Paper 1 (1h), Paper 2 (2.25h), and Paper 3 (1.25h). Post-reform, these times increase.
