The Biggest Scaling Myth

The most common mistake families make is assuming that picking “high-scaling” subjects automatically produces a higher ATAR. In reality, scaling only rewards a strong raw score. A student who scores 25 in Specialist Mathematics because the content doesn’t suit them will often end up with a lower ATAR contribution than a student who scores 40 in a subject that scales down, but that they’re genuinely good at.

VTAC’s own guidance is consistent on this point: a strong score in a subject you excel in almost always outperforms a mediocre score in a subject chosen purely because it scales well. Scaling should be used to break ties between genuine options you’re already considering — not as the primary reason to choose a subject.

How Should Year 10 Students Actually Use Scaling Data?

When choosing VCE subjects for 2027, here’s a more useful order of priorities:

  1. Genuine interest and aptitude — subjects you’re likely to perform strongly in, based on Year 10 results and engagement.
  2. University course prerequisites — many degrees (especially Medicine, Engineering, and Commerce) require specific subjects like Mathematical Methods or Chemistry regardless of scaling.
  3. Scaling as a tiebreaker — if you’re genuinely torn between two subjects you’d do equally well in, scaling can help decide.
  4. Realistic workload balance — a demanding, high-scaling subject combination only helps if you can maintain strong performance across all of them, including your other subjects.
